X-WR-CALDESC:Something to Reckon With\, a body of work by B. Jean Larson\,
professor at Appalachian State University\, will be on display Mar. 10 – M
ay 6\, 2026\, at the FMU Stephen F. Gately Gallery. The exhibition is free
and open to the public\, and there will be a reception on Mar. 10th at 5:
30 p.m. with live music by FMU Music students.\n\nSomething to Reckon With
features soft sculptures and photographic documentation of site-based ins
tallations by B. Jean Larson\, a professor at Appalachian State University
whose work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. Larson’s pr
actice explores value and visibility through intersections of textile craf
t\, queer theory\, and posthumanism. \n\nCentered on the metaphor of the
bog—a space between land and water\, historically dismissed yet ecological
ly essential—the work considers how cultural and environmental systems ass
 ign worth.\n\nUsing exclusively secondhand textiles\, Larson hand-braids d
iscarded fabrics into large\, modular forms that move between painting and
sculpture\, art and craft. By placing these works within overlooked lands
capes and translating them into the gallery\, Larson draws attention to en
vironments often undervalued despite their ecological necessity.\n\nThis e
xhibition is part of Handwork 2026: Celebrating American Craft\, a nationw
ide initiative organized by Craft in America in honor of the U.S. Semiquin
 centennial.
