Boys & Girls Clubs guide children to future success

Board Spotlight: Bill Query

For nearly a decade, William “Bill” Query has been a driving force behind Boys & Girls Clubs of the Pee Dee Area, serving on both the Hartsville Board and the Area Executive Board. His steadfast dedication was honored with the prestigious Frankie Award, recognizing his deep commitment to improving the lives of young people across the region.

A graduate of Appalachian State University, he served as Navy lieutenant during the Vietnam War before building a long career in manufacturing, retiring as a Vice President and General Manager. In retirement, he sought ways to serve his community beyond his church, St. Luke Methodist Church of Hartsville, which led him to the Hartsville Club and eventually to the Area Board.

Over his years of service, Bill has witnessed the transformative power of the Clubs. One story that stands out to him is of a Youth of the Year contestant who found stability through the Club after moving between foster homes in several states. With encouragement from her foster family and Club support, she went on to win the competition and pursue a degree in computer science. “She was exceptional,” Bill recalled.

For Bill, moments like that reflect the heart of the mission.

“All children need proper guidance in life, and the Boys & Girls Club gives me the opportunity to be involved in their potential success,” he said.

Despite early-morning drives from Hartsville to Florence for board meeting, he considers his role one of the most rewarding experiences of his life outside of family.

When asked to describe the Boys & Girls Club in a single word, Bill chose committed.

“They are committed to the proper growth, education, and upbringing of all youth.” he explained.

Looking ahead, Bill hopes his recognition will inspire others to follow his example.

 His advice?

“Get involved 100%. If anyone wants to be impactful on the future success of young people as they develop into adults, there’s not better place than the Boys & Girls Clubs.”

Looking to follow Bill’s advice? Here's one way you can.

The Hartsville Boys & Girls Club will hold its Annual Night of Hope Oyster Roast & Auction from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, October 25, at Hartsville Country Club. For tickets or to contribute, visit https://bit.ly/2025NOH.

The Hartsville Boys & Girls Club has been serving the community for more than 25 years and helping thousands of Hartsville youth find a safe, positive place to belong.

In the last 12 months, we have strengthened our partnerships with Bay Road Elementary and Hartsville Middle School and have begun expanding our footprint to make our Club safer and more accessible to help even more kids.

Come celebrate those milestones with us at the Night of Hope and celebrate Bill Query’s 79th birthday that evening too.
